Opening and Closing Songs

Opening and closing songs are used to elicit a sense of structure for the session. The first signals the beginning of music, giving cues and prompts for the clients to begin to engage with music. The latter signifies termination, alerting the client that it is almost time for the session to end. While more common in group settings, using these songs at any point during a session in the hospital and hospice settings can be a great way to provide structure, redirect attention back to the music, and promote engagement.

In the Mood

"In the Mood" is an appropriate song for all ages, and can be adapted easily to engage clients in ways that are tailored to each individual. Here, Whitney Perry demonstrates a few ways to engage clients with prompting and singing.

Happy Trails

"Happy Trails", recorded by Roy Rogers, is a song I have typically used in the older adult setting. However, the message of the song applies well in the hospital and hospice settings, and can be a great way to subtly terminate the session.

"Happy trails to you, until we meet again"

Usually we just sing through the chorus a couple of times.
